From Russia with Club 20

With winter barreling in on us, I figured this week's From Russia with Club would need to warm people up and get them moving. From Russia with Club Volume 20 is heavier on big electro tracks and vocal jams than some of my more recent efforts but certainly holds true to my progressive house roots. The set is full of great individual songs that come together into a cohesive set that is bigger than the sum of its parts (or so I like to think).

Some of my favorites from this mix include the remixes of Kaskade's "Angel on My Shoulder" and Miike' Snow's "Silvia". However the song I feel most connected to is undoubtedly Paul Van Dyk's "We Are Alive". PVD's Original Mix was one of the 10 tracks on the first house mix CD my sister gave me, when I was 17; the version you hear midway through From Russia with Club 20 is Thomas Gold's progressive house remix of the iconic trance anthem, originally released in 2000.

Without further ado, Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club 20 (128 kbps).

From Russia with Club 19

The world's been feeling a little too chaotic to me lately. When the fury and noise starts to crash all around us, sometimes all we can do is take a deep breath and create just a bit of peace around us. I've been going through some trying times, but music has been there as an ever-calming influence in my life.

From Russia with Club 19 reflects the peace I've been searching for. The set builds early with melodic lounge tracks, including two of my recent favorites, "Where Does Your Mind Go" and "Lady Luck". It progresses into some more upbeat and frantic selections, as I try to regain a positive outlook. The mix concludes with one of my favorite classical songs, Ludovico Einaudi's reflective "Fuori Dal Mondo," which translates to "Outside from the World." Listen until the very end.

Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club 19 is dedicated in loving memory to Isaac Moliver, who left us before his time; may his soul finally be at peace.

From Russia with Club 18

I don't know about you, but I love Summer. There is something indescribably awesome about blasting some funky choones while chilling on the beach with a cold drink in your hand. Well with temperatures dropping and Fall rolling in, I figured I'd give myself one more taste of summer; I think you want one too. That's why From Russia with Club Volume 18 is chock full of light and happy Summer tracks.

More than just a tribute to Summer, this is also my ode to Ibiza. After making my pilgrimage for the closing parties in early September, I couldn't resist dotting this set with a few of the greats I saw there. One of the best performances I saw in Ibiza was Calvin Harris at the legendary Cream/Amnesia club; in the middle of the set you'll find "Almost, So Close", my mashup of the Scot's "Feel So Close" and Avicii's "Almost". Try it on for size and cure your Autumn blues.

Here with a taste of Summer, Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club 18 (128 kbps)

From Russia with Club 17

And Iggy N Scratchy said, "Let there be BASS!" And it was good.

I've received a lot of requests recently to expand on the Electro and Dubstep I've featured in some of my recent sets. The resulting mix is a hard pounding hour of big bassed goodness.

This ode to the gods of Electro features some of my favorite recent tracks, such as Porter Robinson's remix of "Less Go" and Tommy Trash's "The End", as well as some classics, including Dirty South's version of "It's Too Late" and Benny Benassi's take on the Public Enemy classic "Bring the Noise". Perhaps one of the most interesting track is Afrojack's remix of J. Pearl's "Must Be a Reason Why", which samples of one of my favorite old Judge Jules' tracks, "King of My Castle".

From Russia with Club 16

Although populated by some familiar names, From Russia with Club 16 is quite different from my usual progresssive house, electro, big beat mixes. What you'll find with Volume 16 is the Iggy N Scratchy take on lounge music. The more laid back feel is perfect for a relaxing day at the beach, a chill afternoon around a hookah, or a lowkey night sipping your drink of choice with some good friends.

I really dig these tracks individually and have been obsessed with each of them at one point or another over the past year or so. Most recently I have been completely captivated by the deliberate vocals of Fedde Le Grande's 2009 remix of Sono's "Keep Control" and the slow, dissonant build in the middle of Pleasurekraft's "Tarantula". I hope you enjoy listening to this departure from my norm as much as I enjoyed mixing it.

Get your lounge on with Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club 16 (128 kbps).

From Russia with Club 15

From Russia with Club Volume 15 starts out with some very high energy house and electro tracks before easing into a more melodic progressive sound. The mix is chock full of beautiful vocal tracks, highlighted by Calvin Harris and Kelis' massive hit "Bounce" and Michael Woods remix of Martin Solveig and Dragonette's earlier chart topper "Hello".
The end of the set features a pair of my favorite tracks by German up and comer Moguai, who had a great half hour set at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas a few weeks ago.

Throw it on your stereo and get the party started with Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club Volume 15 (128 kbps).

From Russia with Club 14

After an involuntary hiatus, I'm happy to be releasing a long overdue From Russia with Club. Unlike Volume 13, From Russia with Club 14 is a return to a more pure progressive house sound. Littered with tracks and remixes by some huge names, the gems of this mix are Kaskade's "Stars Align Tomorrow" Mashup and Doc Brown's "Asteroid Your Heart" Bootleg.

In this mix you'll also find two Iggy N Scratchy original mashups. The first is an edit of one of my favorite songs at the moment, Afrojack's "Doing it Right", which I felt was due for a vocal mix. The second is an update on one of my favorite songs from last year, Josh Gabriel's "Crosstalk", which receives a bit of Fatboy Slim funk, because, let's be honest, we could all use more Fatboy Slim in our lives.

Without further ado, Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club Volume 14 (128 kbps).

High Quality (320 kbps) download available.

From Russia with Club Volume 14 Set List:

1. The Fugees- Ready Or Not (Fox 5 & Wolfgang Gartner remix)

DJ Power Rankings: April/May part 3

10. Calvin Harris- I was fortunate enough to catch the spinning Scot at Liv in Miami during WMC 2010, and he absolutely killed it. When he isn't wrecking decks at venues around the world, Calvin is delivering bangers, such as "You Used to Hold Me" and the much anticipated "Bounce".

9. Wolfgang Gartner- The Texas native burst onto the scene with some big tracks this past year. "Conscindo", "Animal Rights", and his remix of the Fugees' "Ready or Not" are all praiseworthy efforts, but his crown jewel was smash hit "Illmerica", which may also be one of the greatest music videos ever made.

8. Hardwell- Yet another young up and coming Dutch DJ, Hardwell has produced some of my favorite tracks of the past year. His remixes of Gregor Salto's "Your Friend", Haley's "Physical", and Nadia Ali's "At the End" were all great improvements over the already solid originals. However, his original productions are what solidified his lofty position. His collaboration with Tiesto on "Zero 76" was one of the year's biggest hits; while, solo efforts "Molotov" and "Asteroid" were two of the most underrated tracks of the past 12 months.

7. Kaskade- The highest ranked American, Illinois native Ryan Raddon, better known as Kaskade, absolutely lit it up this past year. Known for his infectious vocal jams, Kaskade released some absolute monsters including "Raining", "Finally", "Dynasty" and my personal favorite "Fire in Your New Shoes". Keep your eyes on Kaskade, as he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

6. Steve Angello- The second of the Swedish House boys on this list reminded us that he can bring it whether or not Ingrosso and Axwell are in tow. Angello had himself a solid solo year with "Knas", "Rave N Roll", "Valodja" (with brother AN21) and his remix of Magnetic Man's "Perfect Stranger".

5. Michael Woods- Although I have yet to see this famed British producer, Michael Woods solidified his place in the top 5 on the strength of his track roster alone. His original productions include "Dominos", "Dropzone", and hit tracks "No Access" and "First Aid". Not content with simply producing his own smashes, Woods was my favorite remixer of the year thanks to his work on La Roux's "In for the Kill", Katie Melua's "The Flood", Kylie Minogue's "All the Lovers", and Moguai's "Oyster".

4. Dirty South- Originals "Stopover" and "Phazing" and remixes of Dirty Money's "Coming Home" and Jeremy Olander's "Airsteala" represented a solid but not stellar year of production for the awesome Aussie. What set Dirty South apart in my mind was his massive set at Electric Zoo in New York, which would have been best in show, if it wasn't for #1 on this list.

3. Avicii- Simply put, the young Swede is currently my favorite producer in the game. The 21 year old virtuoso dropped some serious bombs this past year, including "My Feelings for You", "ID", "Levels", "Street Dancer", "Seek Bromance", and massive remixes of Junior Caldera's "Can't Fight This Feeling" and Nadia Ali's classic, "Rapture".

2. Laidback Luke- Born in the Philippines and raised in the Netherlands, Luke van Scheppingen, aka Laidback Luke, finds himself in the number 2 spot. Luke produced some absolutely stellar tracks this past year, including "Indestructible", "Turbulence", "Till Tonight", and my personal favorite "Timebomb"; remixes of i Square's "Hey Sexy Lady" and Wynter Gordon's "Dirty Talk" round out an ambitious year. Luke elevated himself in my eyes by dropping an absolutely fire set at Liv in Miami during WMC 2010.

1. Axwell- And then there was 1. As a solo artist Axel Hedfors blessed us with "Nothing But Love 4 You" and "Heart is King". At Electric Zoo, Axwell stood head and shoulders above the rest; he pretty much solidified his place atop these rankings that day by spinning the greatest set I have ever heard. Oh and he was part of some little group called Swedish House Mafia.

The transcendent trio of Axwell, Angello, and Ingrosso released the year's biggest (and most remixed) hit, "One", kept their momentum going with the catchy "Miami 2 Ibiza", and put out too many sublime remixes to name here. By headlining some massive shows, including their own rival to Ultra Music Festival, they put their indelible mark on this past year, the year of Swedish House Mafia.

Hope you've enjoyed this feature. The next edition of the power rankings will be released in July/August and will be considerably shorter than this original incarnation (carpel tunnel much?)

From Russia with Club 13

Been a while since I've posted one of these. Life's been a bit hectic lately, so unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to record any new sets. Until I get a chance to pump out some fresh mixes, I have a bit of a throwback to tide you over. From Russia with Club 13 is actually a live set I recorded back in 2009 at an AEPi party at Tufts. Given this past weekend's Spring Fling, I found it especially appropriate.

Because of the setting, you'll notice that this mix is much more pop/hip hop heavy, but I did my best to spice it up with remixes by Laidback Luke, Steve Angello, Dave Aude, David Guetta, and others. Since this is a little different, I'd love your feedback on whether you want to hear more of this kind of pop/house blend or prefer the straight progressive house and electro I've been pumping out until now.

For your listening pleasure Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club Volume 13 (320 kbps)

From Russia with Club Volume 13 Set List:
1. Robin S vs. Steve Angello & Laidback Luke- Show Me Love vs. Be (Hardwell remix)
2. LMFAO ft. Lil' Jon vs. Steve Angello & Laidback Luke - Show Me Shots (Iggy N Scratchy Mashup)
3. Will Smith- Miami (Laidback Luke Bootleg)
4. Backstreet Boys- Everybody (Iggy N Scratchy Edit)
5. Rihanna- Disturbia (Bugzz Waiting for You remix)
6. Lady Gaga- Pokerface (Dave Aude remix)
7. David Guetta ft. Akon- Sexy Bitch
8. Madonna- Miles Away (Bugzz Supermode remix)
9. Supermode- Tell Me Why
10. Black Eyed Peas- I Gotta Feeling
11. Haddaway- What is Love
12. Britney Spears- Circus (DJ TAJ vs Matt Green & Laidback Luke Edit Remix)
13. Lady Gaga- Paparazzi (HeartBazz remix)
14. Black Eyed Peas- Boom Boom Pow (David Guetta Electro Hop remix)
15. Guru Josh Project- Infinity 2008 (Klaas Vocal Re-edit)
16. Kid Cudi- Day 'N Night (Crookers remix)
17. The Ian Carey Project- Get Shaky

DJ Rankings: April/May part 2

20. Mark Knight- Known primarily for hits "Man with the Red Face" and "Downpipe", Mark's 2010 hit "Conscindo" is a great, light Spring track and has been remixed more times than I can count.

19. Adam K.- A frequent collaborator with Soha, Adam K. produced some massive tracks in the past year. With Kaskade, he produced the catchy vocal hit "Raining" and collaborated with fellow Canadian Addy to give the oft-remixed "Popcorn" a fresh sound. But that all pales in comparison to my favorite song of the past year, Adam's epic vocal hit "Complicated"; if you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and take a listen.

18. Spencer & Hill- The German house producers are on this list because of 3 great remixes from the past year. This duo is responsible for high energy remixes of Sultan and Ned Shepard's "Call My Name", The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Heads Will Roll", and my personal favorite Afrojack's "Take Over Control."

17. Sidney Samson- The Dutch DJ, known primarily for his 2009 release, "Riverside", finds himself in the #17 spot thanks to 2 originals and 1 amazing remix. Sidney's "Set Me On Fire" is blessed with the infectious vocals of veteran house singer Tara McDonald; while, "Panaroma" goes in the completely opposite direction with some smashing synth sounds. His remix of Rihanna's hit "S&M" brings a funky dance beat to an already catchy choone.

16. Moguai- Although I have not had the pleasure of seeing this German born DJ as of yet, I am comfortable putting Moguai here on the strength of a great year of producing. Moguai's progressive house productions include "We Want Your Soul", "Oyster", "Original Hardcore" and my personal favorite "Optimuum".

15. Deadmau5-Over the past year I saw Deadmau5 live twice; I loved him at Terminal 5, but thought that his show at the Wellmont Theater was the worst DJ performance I've ever attended. Still, there is no denying that in the past year Deadmau5 has really taken over the Electronica/Dubstep scene, headlining multiple name brand festivals.

14. Chris Lake- Representing Scotland, Chris Lake released some fantastic tracks in the past year. My favorites of the past year include "Secrets in the Dark", his remix of Naline and Kane's "Beachball", and the eerily disjointed electro jam "Sleepwalker".

13. Armin Van Buuren- If this was a career achievement list, no doubt Armin would be right near the top, but I'm just looking at the last year, so AVB comes in at #13. With the exception of "Full Focus", Armin's 'Mirage' album didn't do much for me. Still, the Dutch legend continues to kill it live, and being the most fun, crowd-engaging DJ in the game goes a long way in my book.

12. Tiesto- Perhaps the number 1 DJ of all time, Tiesto had yet another solid year. One of the best live performers I've ever seen, the Dutch legend continues to headline major festivals and sell out venues around the globe. While 'Club Life' continues to be one of the best podcasts out there, Tiesto had only three really notable tracks, "Work Hard, Play Hard", "Zero 76," his collaboration with countryman Hardwell and his solid remix of the already excellent "We Live for the Music".

11. Sebastian Ingrosso- 1/3 of Swedish House Mafia, Sebastian Ingrosso finds himself in this lofty position primarily because of his collaboration work and SHM's amazing live performances. In addition to the SHM tracks, which will be covered in a later post, Ingrosso had some solid duo collaborations with Steve Angello, including remixes of Hard Fi's "Suburban Knights" and Buy Now's "For Sale".

DJ Power Rankings: April/May part 1

This week I'm introducing a new feature for you good people out there on the interweb. From now on, every 2 months, I'll be rolling out a power ranking of my top DJ's. The ranking will be a composite of the DJs' Year to Date work and their work since the last rankings. Future rankings will be significantly shorter, but for the introductory edition, I tried to provide a bit of background info on the DJ's.

For the first rankings, I'll be considering the DJs' work from Winter Music Conference/Ultra Music Festival 2010 through just before Ultra 2011. Note: Career achievement plays no role in these rankings; anything from before March, 2010 does not factor into my consideration. The July/August edition of the Power Rankings will factor in WMC/Ultra 2011, once I've listened to all of the sets from Ultra courtesy of house4dj.com and the magic that is modern technology.

Honorable Mentions:
Afrojack- Some notable productions, including Replica and Take Over Control (which Spencer & Hill improved upon), but had the undoubtably WORST set at Electric Zoo 2010. Combined with my general distaste for Dutch house and Afrojack misses the cut.

Ferry Corsten- Ferry is one of the few Trance DJ's I still listen to on a consistent basis, and I'd love to include him in my Top 25, but his year simply did not justify it. Corsten's "Once Upon a Night" album, released in two volumes failed to generate much buzz, as he had a relatively quiet production year. "Alejandro Hung Up," a mashup of the Lady Gaga and Madonna tracks was a solid effort, but the most attention Ferry received all year was for other artists, such as Sidney Samson and Cosmic Gate, remixing his iconic track "Punk".

David Guetta- I used to love Guetta back in the days of "Just a Little More Love" and "Fuck Me I'm Famous," but his recent hip hop and pop heavy efforts really fall short for me. Guetta has become one of the most in demand producers for the hip hop and pop community, but he has done so at the expense of his House fans. With the possible exceptions of Kelly Rowland's "Commander" and Kelis' "Acapella," Guetta has not produced anything of value in the past year. Here's hoping the French DJ returns to form with his highly anticipated fifth studio album, due out in Summer, 2011.

25. Pryda (Erik Prydz)- One of my all-time favorites, Eric Prydz (aka Pryda) became a household name for his chart-topping anthems, "Call on Me" and "Pjanoo". His recent productions have not generated as much noise, but they've been a reminder of what a keen ear the Swedish DJ and producer has. Original productions, released under the Pryda moniker, over the course of the last year included "Vega", "Niton", and "Miami to Atlanta". Notable remixes, released as Eric Prydz, included Felix Da Housecat's "Thee Anthem" and Faithless' "Not Going Home".

24. Dada Life- Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom, aka Dada Life, have been performing since 2006, but really broke through this past year with their epic Electro House beats and catchy synth hooks. Among a vast array of remixes and original productions over the last year, the two that really stand out for me are their smash hit "White Noise, Red Meat" and "Tomorrow," the duo's collaboration with Dmitri Vegas and Like Mike. Keep an eye out for the Swedish DJ's to really blow up over the course of the next year.

23. Alex Gaudino- The Italian veteran is known around the world for his 2007 smash "Destination Calabria", but here at From Russia with Club, we are far more interested with what he has done for us lately. What Alex has lacked in quantity this past year, he has made up for in quality. Gaudino is on this list almost entirely because of one song but what a song it is. Gaudino's major 2010 release, "I'm in Love" was probably the 3rd most remixed song of 2010, behind only "Open Your Heart" and a certain Swedish House Mafia track. Note: Gaudino's recent collaboration with Kelly Rowland was leaked before Ultra, but because the official release date was actually March 29th, it will count for the next edition of the Power Rankings.

22. Robbie Rivera- Rivera can primarily thank "We Live for the Music" for his position on this list. "Let Me Sip My Drink" and "Oh Baby" were also solid efforts but nothing to write home about. The Puerto Rican native continued to bring the fire on his "Juicy Music Show" podcast, a staple of my house music diet. Rivera is really at his best live, and you can expect him to jump up the rankings once his epic Ultra set is factored in.

21. Roger Sanchez- The S man will also benefit from a post-Ultra bump, but in the mean time his spot here is secured by his excellent October release, "2Gether", and his remix of Brandon Flowers' "Only the Young". Additionally, Sanchez's "Release Yourself" podcast continues to be one of my favorite out there.

Check back later this week for #'s 20-11.

From Russia with Club 12

Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club Volume 12 is a bit of a deviation from some of my previous mixes. I recorded it just before leaving for vacation, and the prospect of cruising the high seas with some quality people just had me in a wild and euphoric mood. The result was my funkiest mix to date, since all I wanted to do was get up and break it down. After listening, I hope you'll feel the same way.

The early part of the set may not have many recognizable DJ names, but tracks such as Ultra Flava and Volta absolutely bring the funk. For you electro/progressive house kiddies, don't fret; I make sure to bring in the Swedish House boys and Laidback Luke just so you feel all nice and cozy. Put it all together and what you got is From Russia with Club Volume 12.

From Russia with Club 11

Thanks for tuning into another edition of Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club. This week's set has a bit more of a trance feel than some of my previous mixes, as evidenced by the presence of trance mainstays Armin Van Buuren and Eric Prydz. But with my eclectics tastes, you'll also be treated to heavy doses of progressive house and instrumental synths.

This mix features some great new tracks and remixes, including two of my favorite choones of the moment, the Wideboys remix of "Pong" and Chris Lake and Marco Lys' beautifully melodic "Violins."

Crank the volume to 11 and let Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club Volume 11 (128 kbps) take you into the weekend.

Production Quality (320 kbps) download available.

From Russia with Club 10

I'd like to start this week's post by thanking everyone who gave me feedback on From Russia with Club Volume 9; I appreciate the great comments and critiques and hope to see similar responsiveness in the future.

From Russia with Club Volume 10 includes a portion of my live set from New Years Eve. Volume 10 throws you right into the mix, by starting out with my NYE midnight Swedish House Mafia Medley, which many of you have requested. After the strong start, the set does not let up, as it's chock full of Electro Club Bangers from some of the biggest DJ's in the game.

From Russia with Club Volume 10 is really a who's who of the top DJ's from this past year and serves as an excellent preview for my 2010 Year in Review to be published next week. In addition to the SHM tracks, you'll find multiple appearances by Avicii and Dirty South, as well as one of my favorite Calvin Harris tracks from the summer.

From Russia with Club 9

After taking a bit of a break from posting sets, Iggy N Scratchy Presents: From Russia with Club Volume 9 is finally hear in the new year. Unfortunately, I encountered some technical difficulties trying to record my live set from New Years Eve at Choga; however, Volume 9 is my tribute to that night and features several tracks that will sound familiar to anyone who was in attendance.

The set features a healthy dose of vocal anthems, a couple of tracks from one of my new favorites, Michael Woods and a few older gems from the likes of Moby, Laidback Luke, and Armin Van Buuren.

In addition to new sets, keep checking back over the next few weeks for my Best of 2010 countdowns of last year's top tracks and preeminent DJ's.
